The Hangover

A real great comedy only comes once in a while. And this is one of them!
I thought it would be one of those predictable movies where "ok they go from point A to D discovering B and C along the way". I was completely wrong... you feel as lost as they do! You'll be tagging along wondering... they'll be "Fuck why did we do that!" and you'll be sitting thinking "Fuck why did they do that!". You just never know where the movie is going.
As far as comedy goes, this is one the great ones. Ed Helms, Bradley Cooper and Zach Galifianakis really deliver :) 9/10 because there was some childish humor the movie could do without. Other than that, great comedy!

How to be skeptical

My friend Ruben shared this video and I was skeptical when I started watching it... Now that's ironic :D
It's about the ways and tools you should use to question information thrown at you daily. Personally, I don't believe that being completely skeptical is the way to go, but I couldn't disagree with this video once... In my opinion, major issues should be questioned based on science and data.

The Proposal

When you get free tickets to a movie, you just go, even if it is "The Proposal". The movie is a light comedy with a strong enphasis on romance and miraculous love. Both main characters surprised me because they performed roles that are not their typical ones: Ryan Reynolds is way more quite that usual and much wiser, and Sandra Bullock is a strong woman. The dog jokes were quite good, and so were the ones about Margaret Tate's shoes.
I got fed up because the movie is slow and has a lot of romantic notions inbetween the comedy moments. But hey, if you're into romantic movies, you'll probably enjoy it a lot. For me, 3/10.

Bat for Lashes - Trophy (Live)

I was sitting on my dark living room when my random player played this song... I'm not a fan of Bat for Lashes, but I must admit they do get it really right on some of their songs.
Here is a great live performance of this song... And I must admit I am amazed at the quality of her voice: on an album anyone can sound good (even if using auto-tuner :P) but live... well that's another story!

White Rabbits - Percussion Gun

White Rabbits "Percussion Gun" Music Video from White Rabbits on Vimeo.

I had already mentioned these guys on my blog. They have a new album out, and this great Percussion Gun is the single.
The reasons why I like this band: the rythm section is really amazing (with two drummers and a pretty good bass player), the guitar riffs are simple but beautiful, and the dissonant voice just throws in your face that they're no boys band (which would have really messed it up for me).

Les rivières pourpres

Jean Reno and Vincent Cassel make a formidable duo of actors. The movie is entertaining, but there are too many obvious leads... it's a mix between thriller and detective movie, but I think it fails in both domains.
The start is pretty good, and the way both characters meet is quite well thought out. If it wasn't for all those blant and obvious leads and the poor ending, the movie would be great. It kind of feels like the script writer ran out of ideas. 6/10
I'm still gonna check out the sequel, hoping that the story is better... cause this one had everything to be great: good director, special fx, good actors, the works.

Solaris

This movie was recommended to me once again on a Martini night chatting with my friends. It was on my "To Watch" list for quite some time, so I decided it was time :P

The movie is quite slow paced, but still I found that some details were probably missing. I really liked the way the story is told, switching between past life and present on the space station. And I also liked the concept of the "visitors". I loved the existential doubts that haunted the "visitors".
And the thing I liked the most, but found that it was a concept the movie was not focusing on, was the "every time we scan the planet, it scans us back". It hints to an intelligent existence that the human mind simply can not understand. The use of "visitors" feels as a tool the intelligence is using to study humans. However, the focus of the movie goes mainly to the relationship between the main character and his wife.

I liked it, and I think it's a strong movie... not a must see, but a "watch if you feel like thinking about stuff". 7/10

My Kubuntu Adventure - The Saga Continues

So I decided to continue updating my blog with some trouble I come across while exploring Kubuntu (and solutions hopefully). It's just that some of this information was kind of hard to dig out, and are mainly workarounds, not solutions.

1 - I needed to download some e-books to decide which one to buy -> emule is the best source for books I've found -> amule is the Linux version of it -> won't install via Kpackage => must be installed using "apt-get install amule" on terminal
2 - Quessel IRC does not support XDCC transfers (or at least, it wouldn't prompt me to accept files, and transfers would just time out) -> tried looking for IRC clients for Linux, found a bunch but they were all old and not that functional => Firefox add-on Chatzilla :)
(for those of you wondering why IRC and why XDCC, you'd be amazed the things you can download from bots on IRC)

3 - KPackage will block most updates -> it's a problem with KPackage that should be updating using "apt-get update" before checking for updates or something like that => Installed Synaptic and dropped KPackage, as it has too many bugs!

So the saga continues :) so far I must say that I am surprised. I thought that I would be running away from this laptop constantly due to limitations, but I haven't.

Klaxons - Golden Skanks

These guys are crazy. The first time I heard their 2007 album, it felt strange. It was interesting, but strangely diferent. A few months later and it grew on me. My favourite track would be "It's Not Over Yet", but there was no video available.

My Kubuntu Adventure

The name of this post is similar to a Scrubs episode. The reason... probably because it's as crazy as one.

So now that I have 2 laptops, I finally decided to have one running Linux... no dual boot shit, just plain hardcore Linux. First decision? Ubuntu or Kubuntu? Ubuntu is easier and has better support, Kubuntu is lighter and is somewhat prettier. I decided to go with Kubuntu.

Installed it, ran it... ok everything running smooth. Then... and out of the blue, the shit hit the fan!
1 - Flash in Firefox and VLC player lost their audio. -> I got it to work, it's a KDE 4 problem
2 - Amarok 2 wouldn't scrobble to Last.FM -> I got it to work, it's a 2.02 problem, added a repository and downloaded 2.1
3 - Dropbox was working? Was it? I did not know -> I got it to almost work. So apparently, Dropbox client for Ubuntu is heavily based on Nautilus and has no KDE support. BUT, the client will install itself, and run a demon in the background. Furthermore, a "dropbox" line command becomes available, to be used with "status" "start" "stop". It's as it's been said... Dropbox on Linux just works :P

So these are the crazy times this laptop has been living lately. The goal is to have a laptop @ home running Kubuntu and able to do everything I did with Vista... it'll take some time, but it seems possible.

Obras da CRIL
